PORTLAND (WGME) — The shark sightings in Maine keep coming in.

One of the most compelling images captured so far is from Maine-based National Geographic Explorer Brian Skerry, who had a close encounter off the coast of Harpswell last week.

“She made a few passes,” Skerry said. “One, she got within four feet of me, and as she was approaching, that’s when I was able to do a series of frames. She was just below the surface, and I was trying to frame it to see the surface, and that’s the picture we went with at National Geographic, but there was no aggression, she was not threatening. Stayed around 2-3 minutes and then she was gone.”

Two separate viewers say they saw a shark, about 12 feet long, in the same area: off Bailey Island this week.

Shark warning flags are up at beaches in the area.
