The Boston Teachers Union (BTU) welcomed thousands of Boston families to its 12th Annual Back to School Fair at its headquarters in Dorchester on Sat., Sept. 27. The free event featured over 40,000 free books for students, families, and educators, along with dozens of local community organizations sharing information on programs and opportunities for BPS families.

Children and families also enjoyed music, face-painting, snacks, and special story time sessions with local authors – while taking in the refreshing views of Boston Harbor along with a notable guest, American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten.

“Our Back to School Fair is about more than books; it’s about equity,” said Lea Serena, the union’s vice president. “Every child in Boston deserves the chance to discover the joy of reading and start the school year off right. Together, we’re building a stronger foundation for literacy and learning across our city.”

Since its launch in 2013, the fair has become one of Boston’s largest book- distribution events, with hundreds of thousands of books given free over the years. The event is made possible through the BTU’s long-standing partnership with First Book and the support of dozens of community organizations across the city.
