Loved ones plan benefit after two teens killed in crash

  • October 6, 2025

LAFAYETTE COUNTY, Fla. (WCTV/Gray News) – Neighbors in the tight-knit community of Mayo are coming together for a mother who lost two teenagers in a crash last weekend.

Family and friends identified the victims as 15-year-old Jayden Kornegay and 13-year-old Nevaeh Kornegay.

Loved ones say the victims’ two siblings were also injured in the crash. A fifth child in the backseat was also injured.

According to highway patrol, during the rain last week, troopers say the driver of the teens somehow lost control of the car and crossed into the lane of a Lafayette County patrol vehicle before the collision.

“I am shattered. I’m heartbroken. I am still in disbelief,” said family friend Michelle Lane.

Lane became emotional, describing the personalities of the young victims.

“Naveah loves to dance; she is a girly girl,” Lane continued. “Jayden was never afraid to hug you and let you know he loved you and stuff like that.”

Flowers and balloons now cover up the crash scene.

The Kornegays’ 10-year-old sibling, Naomi, was released Thursday, but loved ones say 14-year-old Alina remains in the hospital

“She is a fighter. We are not giving up on her. She is going to have a long road. Naomi has a long road,” said Lane.

A bake sale was held to raise money for the family.

“When things like this happen, we all step in and help however we can,” said Sharon Shasteen.

Shasteen doesn’t even know the family personally, but wants to help.

“As a mother of having two boys, my heart hurts knowing that out of her four kids, she has lost two.”

A bake sale is a way that Shasteen can use her talents to share with others. She says she often does silent auctions to raise money for people in need.

“I do cakes, cookies, pies, baskets, whatever,” said Shasteen.

There are also plans for a cake auction for the family in October.

Friends want to support the children’s mother, Jamie Folsom.

“Jamie was very close with all of her kids. She was mom and dad, so they were her life,” said LeAnne Smith, a friend of the family.

The cake auction is set to take place on October 18 at Country Strong Gym in Mayo.

“Jayden had been one of our gym kids for quite a while. A couple years, good kid,” said Melissa Keen, the gym’s owner.

In a town with a population of a little more than 1,000 people, neighbors say there is no shortage of love here.

“We’re a community that when our people hurt, we hurt with them. We see that and we just want to love on them,” said Keen.
