World News Live Updates: Intruder vandalizes Washington Capitol, toppling busts and burning historic rug

An intruder broke into the Washington state Capitol late Sunday, causing “significant damage” before being arrested by state troopers.

The man, who has a history of mental health challenges, used two hammers to break in and was booked on suspicion of first-degree burglary, arson, and malicious mischief.

During his rampage, the suspect knocked over busts of George Washington and Martin Luther King Jr., broke a glass door, and set fire to an original, “priceless treasure” rug in the State Reception Room, as well as several flags.

The State Patrol stated the attack was not politically motivated but appeared to be driven by an “individual experiencing a mental health crisis.”
