The City of Taft today issued a boil water notice for residents after a leak was discovered at the city’s water tower on Retama Street.
According to city officials, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) required the notice after the leak. The precautionary measure advises all residents to boil their water before consumption, including for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, or washing hands and faces.
Children, seniors and individuals with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable to harmful bacteria and are urged to follow the boil order closely, city officials said.
The notice instructs residents to bring water to a vigorous rolling boil for at least two minutes before use or to use bottled water for drinking and cooking. Ice made from tap water should also be discarded and replaced with water that has been properly boiled or bottled.
The city said the order will remain in effect until tests confirm the water is safe to drink. Residents will be notified when the notice is lifted.
Taft ISD announced in a Facebook post that all water fountains at all campuses would be shut off all day.
