In a move that is sure to excite half of America and enrage the other, Amazon MGM Studios announced it will release “Melania” exclusively in theaters on Jan. 30, 2026. The documentary looks at First Lady Melania Trump, a polarizing and enigmatic political presence, and is directed by Brett Ratner, the “Rush Hour” filmmaker whose career was derailed by #MeToo allegations. Amazon shelled out a reported $40 million for the rights to the film, a staggering payday for a documentary.

In addition to announcing the release date, Amazon shared a first-look image from the film of the First Lady staring at a tarmac from the window of an SUV.

According to the official description, the film “offers unprecedented access to the 20 days leading up to the 2025 Presidential Inauguration — through the eyes of the First Lady-elect herself.” Amazon MGM also invites viewers to “step inside Melania Trump’s world as she orchestrates inauguration plans, navigates the complexities of the White House transition, and reenters public life with her family.” The studio said it has “exclusive footage” of “critical meetings” and “private conversations.” Amazon founder Jeff Bezos was one of several tech titans who made a point of making the trek to D.C. to attend Donald Trump’s inauguration.

The film will stream on Prime Video following its theatrical run. In addition, the studio said there will be an accompanying three-part docuseries, which will follow Melania Trump’s as she is ferried between Trump Tower in New York City, Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach and Washington, D.C., where her husband assumed power after winning the 2024 presidential election.

Ratner hasn’t worked on major Hollywood productions since 2017, when he was accused of sexual misconduct by six women in a Los Angeles Times expose. Warner Bros., where he had a first-look deal, severed ties with him. The filmmaker denied the claims. Ratner’s credits also include “Tower Heist,” “Red Dragon” and “Money Talks.”

The documentary was made with Melania Trump’s participation. She is also a producer on the film.
