NASCAR icon Dale Earnhardt Jr. has outlined a bold plan to overhaul how fans experience race day. The Hall of Famer believes the sport is missing a key ingredient to captivate fans and keep them coming back each week.
According to Earnhardt, the thrill of race day, from pre-race strategy to the drama of qualifying sessions, he believes there’s untapped potential in how NASCAR presents itself on television and online. But what is the one ingredient missing from modern NASCAR coverage?
What Is Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s Vision for the Future of NASCAR Coverage?
Speaking candidly on his “Dale Jr Download” podcast, Earnhardt emphasized the need for a “pillar show” that would give fans a weekly reason to tune in.
It’s hard to know what would move the needle for NASCAR on TV. 📺

“What we’re missing is the build up weekly shows, you know,” said Earnhardt. “Turning in on a, you know, get home from work, turn on the television and watch 30 minutes to an hour of talk, conversation around the sport. We need like a pillar show like RPM tonight. That was a yeah, we need that one show that’s like the all catch-all.”
The JR Motorsports co-owner also called for more narrative around practice and qualifying sessions, suggesting that building these into storylines would enhance fan engagement and deepen understanding of race-day dynamics.
He added, “We also need practise and qualifying to be storylines. Storylines, yeah, we need little more. It gives you opportunity to, like, understand what to expect on the race day. And it gives you an opportunity to talk and tell stories and stuff about what you could see.”
What Untapped Potential Earnhardt Sees in NASCAR’s Coverage?
Earnhardt’s vision comes when NASCAR seeks new ways to grow its audience, particularly among younger fans accustomed to digital storytelling and immersive sports coverage.
NASCAR has already begun experimenting with digital content, short-form clips, and behind-the-scenes access through its streaming partners, social media channels, and the NASCAR app.
By turning practice sessions, qualifying rounds, and driver rivalries into engaging storylines, Earnhardt hopes the sport can leverage streaming to create appointment-viewing moments that build excitement throughout the week and can attract casual viewers and hardcore fans alike.
With content consumption habits changing rapidly, NASCAR has an opportunity to combine tradition with innovation, and Earnhardt’s ideas are leading the conversation on how to make that happen.
