WILLIAMSBRIDGE, The Bronx (WABC) — An NYPD sergeant was rushed to the hospital following a violent confrontation with a suspect in the Bronx, according to officials.

Police say the incident took place at 1015 E. Gun Hill Rd. in the Williamsbridge section shortly after 10:20 p.m. on Thursday.

Law enforcement sources told Eyewitness News that the sergeant from the 49th Precinct was responding to a robbery when he found himself in a violent hand-to-hand struggle with a suspect.

They say shots were fired, and the sergeant went down with a head injury, but was not shot.

The sergeant was taken to Jacobi Hospital with a non-life-threatening injury, according to law enforcement sources. He is conscious and alert.

Meanwhile, the law enforcement sources said the suspect was shot and is hospitalized with a non-life-threatening injury.

The investigation is ongoing.
