Logan Thompson sported a new bucket during Capitals’ practice on Friday morning, and it has a nice tribute to his teammates.
The back plate features the number of every Capitals defenseman on the team: #3 Matt Roy, #6 Jakob Chychrun, #38 Rasmus Sandin, #42 Martin Fehervary, #47 Declan Chisholm, #52 Dylan McIlrath, #57 Trevor van Riemsdyk, and #74 John Carlson.

Well, almost everyone.
“I am going to put Vinny (Vincent Iorio) on there as well,” Thompson said after practice. “I don’t know if I’ll be able to get it painted, but I’ll throw his number up back there for sure.”
Thompson explained that he came up with the idea over the summer, making the gesture so the team’s rearguards knew how much he appreciated them, especially as someone who doesn’t always express his gratitude out loud.
“Yeah, (those) guys go out there every day and block shots for me, get in lanes, and bail me out quite a bit,” Thompson said. “So I just wanted to get their numbers on my back plate, just knowing that I don’t always say anything, but I’m thinking of them.”
While the defenseman felt the love, Thompson admitted there were some who felt left out, with Capitals forwards chirping Thompson for the design.
“A little bit, yeah,” Thompson said. “So I didn’t think it all the way through, maybe I’ve got to just throw the whole team on there eventually.”
The back plate is part of Thompson’s new mask for away games. Mostly white and light blue in color to match his away gear, the netminder’s new bucket also features the Capitol dome at the top, a screaming eagle on the left and right of the shell, and Thompson’s number ’48’ beneath on the chin.
Thompson debuted another new mask earlier in training camp themed after ‘Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian.’ That mask is mostly red to match his goalie gear and jersey for home games.
“I like to carry a three masks in a season: a home, away, and then alternate,” Thompson said. “So yeah, first day with the away set.”
