Transfer guard Ryan Conwell arrives at Louisville following a standout season at Xavier, plus prior experience at South Florida and Indiana State. A product of Indianapolis Pike High School, the 6-foot-4, 215-pound senior strengthens the depth and versatility of Pat Kelsey’s Cardinals.
Last season at Xavier, Conwell garnered third-team All-Big East honors after averaging 16.5 points, 2.7 rebounds, 2.5 assists per game. He’s part of a rebuilt roster that can perform at a high level from all spots on the floor, and at each end.
Practicing under Kelsey is active and always competitive.
“It’s fun,” Conwell said. “You know, it’s just good versus good. Just having such great depth as a team, it’s being able to compete every single day. I think it’s just what’s going to help us, you know, go far this year and just makes us better individually and collectively.”
J’Vonne Hadley: This Louisville team has a little bit of everything
Connecting on 41 percent of his three-point attempts last season, Conwell strengthens UofL’s ability to hit from long range.
“Just super versatile, you know, both ends on the floor, offensively and defensively,” Conwell said of the UofL squad. “We just have a great group of guys just willing to work every single day. I think we’re just going to be a very exciting team, you know, just energetic and just a group of dogs.”
Conwell, who has family from Louisville, is looking forward to taking the floor in the Louisville jersey when the Cardinals face Kansas for an exhibition game on Oct. 24.
“Probably just an unexplainable feeling. just something I dreamed about, just being able to have that experience now. It’ll be something that I’ll just be thankful for. But at the end of the day, it’s just basketball. So I’ll just be thankful just to be out there on the court playing with my brothers.”
Conwell played his freshman year at South Florida and his sophomore year at Indiana State.
A former standout at Pike High School in Indianapolis, Conwell was the Marion County Player of the Year as a senior and committed to South Florida. He started 21 of 32 games in his only season in Tampa, Fla., averaging 5.1 points and 1.9 rebounds a game in 18.4 minutes.
Conwell transferred to Indiana State after that season and played 33.9 minutes a game and averaged 16.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 2.5 assists a game during his sophomore season. He shot 48.2 percent from the field and 40.7 percent from three-point range for the Sycamores.
When coach Josh Schertz left for Saint Louis, Conwell opted to leave Indiana State and landed at Xavier.
