A Seattle man once discovered a super-rare Xbox at a garage sale and snapped it up for just $50, but was able to sell it for a whole lot more.

The original Xbox was released by Microsoft more than two decades ago, in 2001.

By May 2006, Microsoft had sold more than 24 million units.

So you might think that there’s nothing rare about the console, but there are some extremely rare models out there, and one of them was unearthed at a garage sale.

The man who found the super-rare Xbox had no clue what it was

Back in 2015, gamer and collector Emilio was checking out a garage sale near his home in Seattle when he saw some old consoles and games for sale.

Appearing on the Metal Jesus Rocks YouTube channel back in 2015, Emilio admitted that he had no idea what the console was when he first spotted it.

He assumed it was just a modified case on an original Xbox

But upon closer inspection, he realized that it had the official Microsoft and Halo branding, and decided to buy it, parting with just $50.

Now, if you cast your mind back to the original Xbox Halo edition console that was released, you might remember that it was in a translucent green case.

So, Emilio initially thought the Xbox may have been a fake.

However, after doing some digging online, he discovered that the orange Halo Xbox he had just snagged for $50 was actually an extremely rare find.

Unlike the mass-produced green Halo consoles, only three of the orange ones were ever made, and just one of them carried the Halo logo.

Not only that, but they were never sold to the public.

Emilio managed to get in touch with the Microsoft employee who actually made the console, who explained that he’d built this particular model for a friend.

How it ended up at a garage sale with a $50 price tag is a story for the friend to explain, but Emilio was delighted with the super-rare Xbox.

He sold the orange console for a lot more than he paid

Emilio said he took a bit of a risk when he bought the Xbox, as he wasn’t sure it was a fake, or even if it still worked.

But his gamble more than paid off, because in an update under the YouTube video a year on, Metal Jesus Rocks said it had been sold to a private collector for a hefty $15,000.

A truly incredible return on his original $50 investment.

Meanwhile, a similar one went under the hammer at auction for Goodwill and pulled in more than $20,000.
