An Illinois congresswoman recently used an Alton couple as an example of the negative local impact there would be if Congress allows the Affordable Care Act’s enhanced premium tax credits to expire at the end of the year.

Nikki Budzinski testified at a House Democratic Steering and Public Policy Committee hearing about how hard-working forty-somethings Rick and Laura are terrified that without their current health care plan, a single medical emergency could bankrupt them.

Budzinski says she and her Democratic colleagues are demanding that any deal to end the federal government shutdown includes the extension of the tax credits to make health insurance affordable for millions of Americans.

There are signs that some Republicans may be onboard, too. Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene recently said she’s in favor of extending ACA subsidies.

But, House Speaker Mike Johnson said that Greene doesn’t serve on committees that deal with the issue and might not be briefed on some of the details leading Republicans are backing.
