The new season begins for Ohio State women’s basketball in less than a month. To get prepared for the long season ahead, Land-Grant Holy Land brings you 11 player previews for the 11 rostered members of the Buckeyes. Starting things off is guard Bryn Martin, a late commitment flip who joins a team of shooters from the top down.

In September of 2024, Martin committed to the Washington Huskies and head coach Tina Langley. Then, in the spring of 2025, Martin removed that commitment and reopened her recruitment. Martin landed with the Buckeyes on May 18.

Name: Bryn Martin
Position: Guard
Class: Freshman
High School: Springboro High School (Springboro, Ohio)

The Springboro Panthers were on a mission to return to the Division I state finals for a second season. After losing in the 2024 state final to Olmsted Falls, which halted a 15-game winning streak, the Panthers were down 10-0 to start their 2025 state semifinal against Princeton.

With 1:05 remaining in the second half, Martin hit a three-point shot that gave Springboro its first lead of the game. After giving the ball away 15 times in the first half, Martin scored 13 of her 18 points on the day in the second half to surge back into the game.

Unfortunately for the Panthers, Princeton pulled away for the 49-47 win. The unfortunate ending for Martin capped off a season where the 6-foot-1 guard secured a spot on the Division I All-Ohio Team and secured a spot as a finalist for Miss Ohio Basketball, eventually going to Cincinnati Bearcats commit Dee Alexander.

In her final season, Martin set records at Springboro for most three-point shots made in a season and in a career, and led Springboro to two-straight Final Four appearances for the first time since 1978.

Martin is a tall guard who can hurt teams both inside and outside of the perimeter. In terms of position, Martin can play either at the point guard or shooting guard positions, which helps Martin’s chances of earning minutes for head coach Kevin McGuff.

Defensively, Martin played for a team that used a full-court press, another reason for McGuff to go after the Ohio high school grad. That means expect Martin to be gritty on defense, clog passing lanes, and make it difficult for teams to inbound the ball to set up their offenses.

The Springboro guard joins a team full of guards who can shoot the deep ball. With Jaloni Cambridge, point guard is out the window. At media day, McGuff, Chance Gray, and Cambridge alluded to that role changing, but with the returning guards, there is no space for Martin to receive a lot of minutes leading the offense.

With Martin’s size, she could find minutes playing a third guard role, off the bench. The storyline to watch is how McGuff uses Martin, Dasha Biriuk, and Ava Watson, who all potentially come in off the bench. It could be a competition for who earns minutes, and Martin is part of that group playing for them.

Unless Martin’s height and ability to go to the basket get her onto the court as a fourth guard on the court with the Buckeyes carrying only four forwards listed on the roster.

Watch Martin from the Queen City Tip Off on November 23, 2024.
