Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna
Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna made it crystal clear he’s held no talks with Rangers – shutting the speculation down with a brutal seven-word statement.
McKenna had been one of the names higher up in the betting and reports down south had suggested he was one of the potential managers to have held talks with Ibrox chiefs in the wake of Steven Gerrard‘s rejection.
The 39-year-old remains one of the most highly-rated coaches down south despite Ipswich’s relegation from the Premier League last season after leading them to back-to-back promotions from League One straight to the top flight.
That being the case, he was one of the names some Rangers fans were clamouring for to replace Russell Martin.
Despite that, he’s never really been viewed as one of the more likely options given he recently signed a long-term deal at Ipswich.
And asked about reports which suggested he’d held talks with Rangers at his press conference today, he wasn’t mincing his words as he simply replied: “There’s no shred of truth in that.”
As we understand it, Kevin Muscat remains the clear frontrunner despite odds tumbling on Gerrard, appearing to suggest a dramatic U-turn from the Liverpool legend was on the cards.
It’s believed no further talks with Gerrard are planned and, as yet, there’s been no seismic shift in stance which would bring him back to the table after withdrawing on Saturday night.
As well as Muscat, a number of other names are on the table. Danny Rohl remains a live option despite Ibrox decision-makers cooling on the German while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer presents an interesting option after it was revealed he’d held talks earlier this week.
Should it be Muscat, we understand Neil McCann will be named his assistant and would step into the dugout as interim manager after the two struck an agreement to team up two years ago, when Muscat was initially in the frame to replace Michael Beale.
