Officials breaking ground on Mount Pleasant affordable housing project

  • October 16, 2025

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – Charleston County and Charleston Habitat for Humanity are breaking ground Thursday on four affordable homes in Mount Pleasant.

The project on Tower Drive will transform an abandoned church and 1.62-acre plot of land into homes for four families.

Charleston Habitat received $350,000 through Charleston County’s Affordable Housing Land Acquisition Grant Program, which was funded through American Rescue Plan Act money.

To qualify for one of the four houses being built on Tower Drive, families must earn between 35% and 80% of the area median income, which is just over $117,000 in Mount Pleasant.

Charleston Habitat for Humanity officials said monthly costs for these homes will be closer to $1,000, compared to the average two-bedroom rental cost of $1,600 to $1,800 in Charleston.

Lynn Bowley, the chief executive officer for Charleston Habitat for Humanity, said building in desirable locations is crucial for residents’ access to essential services.

“It’s really important to be able to build in places like Mount Pleasant where we are not putting people in an area where there is no access to health care or food or schools,” Bowley said.

The properties are expected to be move-in ready within two years.
