Northern lights sightings possible Thursday night

  • October 16, 2025

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Stargazers in Vermont and the North Country could catch another glimpse of the Aurora Borealis Thursday night. Geomagnetic activity is forecast to pick up Thursday afternoon and remain active into the first part of the night.

Minor to moderate geomagnetic storm conditions are forecast to develop before sunset Thursday afternoon, and peak sometime between 5 p.m. and midnight. This won’t be a major solar storm, but moderate activity often leads to Aurora sightings in our region. The moon will not be visible until just after 3 a.m., which will promote good viewing conditions.

The big question this time of year is whether or not the sky will be clear enough to see anything. Most areas should see mostly clear skies by the time the sun sets on Thursday. The exceptions are the Northeast Kingdom and far northern New Hampshire, where stubborn clouds may linger into the night. Be sure to check back for the latest forecast from the First Alert Weather Team before heading out Thursday night.
