FLINT, Mich. (WJRT) – A $6 million donation from Joe and Julie Serra is set to transform cardiac care at McLaren Flint Hospital, inspired by Joe’s personal journey with heart surgery.
Joe Serra, who survived a heart attack, multiple stents, and quintuple bypass surgery, emphasized the exceptional care he received locally.
“Most people assume I went out of the area for care, but I didn’t ― and I’m glad I didn’t,” Joe said.
In 2012, McLaren Flint expanded its cardiac services by adding top-tier cardiothoracic surgeons. Dr. Sanjay Batra, the medical director of the Cardiothoracic Services Program, highlighted the impact of the Serra’s gift.
“With Joe and Julie’s gift, the few remaining pieces to complete the additional care we want to bring to patients will be possible,” Batra said.
The donation will support a specialized ECMO program, catherization lab renovations, a high cholesterol clinic, and enhanced cardiac rehabilitation services.
Chris Candela, president and CEO of McLaren Flint, praised the Serra’s philanthropy.
“But both Joe and Julie’s philanthropy, and their openness about their experience here, will change and save lives for future patients,” Candela said.
