The Washington Capitals dropped their last game to the Vancouver Canucks, and head coach Spencer Carbery is now switching things up with his lineup ahead of Tuesday night’s contest against the Seattle Kraken.

As part of those changes, winger Ethen Frank will make his season debut after being recalled from the AHL’s Hershey Bears last week. Frank will replace Sonny Milano, who is set to be a healthy scratch after playing just 8:38 of ice time in the 4-3 loss to the Canucks.

“Hopefully, [we see] the same stuff we saw when he (Frank) came up last year,” Carbery said after the team’s morning skate. “This is just a little bit earlier, timing-wise. Speed on display with and without the puck. Any opportunity he gets to attack the net with his shot, and then really good with his positioning, his reads, playing inside of our structure. ”

Frank played in his first 24 career NHL games last season, recording seven points (4g, 3a). In two games for the Bears this year, he scored two goals before being promoted back to the Capitals. He played in four preseason games for the team this fall but was ultimately waived just days before the Caps needed to submit their Opening Night roster.

In those four games, Frank was unable to find the back of the net despite getting several big chances. He did record two assists, including one on a Milano goal at Hershey’s Giant Center against the Philadelphia Flyers.

“[The chances] didn’t go in for him, which I think was sort of part of the reason that… I don’t want to say that we sent him down because of that, but a big part of what Franky does and what he needs to do is be able to chip in the odd time,” Carbery said. “He doesn’t have to score 30 goals or even 20 goals, but for a few of those to fall to not only get on the board, but to give him a little bit of confidence and swagger.

“He was around the puck, put himself in good spots, had a bunch of really good looks, especially early in training camp and early in those preseason games. He tailed off a little bit towards the end. But, yeah, that’s what we’re looking for, is him to get himself and his linemates in as many of those situations as possible.”

While Frank coming in for Milano is the only expected personnel change from the loss to Vancouver, Carbery admitted that “there’ll be things moving around” with other lines, too. One potential move would be Justin Sourdif playing center on the third line, with Hendrix Lapierre moved to the wing, leaving Frank as the probable right winger on Nic Dowd’s line.

The Capitals’ other scratches will be Dylan McIlrath, Declan Chisholm, and Pierre-Luc Dubois, with the latter missing his fourth straight game due to a lower-body injury. Dubois has yet to get out of a no-contact jersey at practice since leaving the team’s lineup.

After Charlie Lindgren took the loss to the Canucks, Logan Thompson will retake the club’s cage against the Kraken. Thompson is 3-1 this season with a 1.75 goals-against average and a .922 save percentage.
