Crews continue to respond to a 20-inch water transmission main break for a second day on Dole Street, fronting Kanewai Community Park near the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

The main break was first reported at about 4:20 p.m. Tuesday, and has resulted in flooded properties, road closures, and a request that residents in Manoa, Saint Louis Heights and Kaimuki use water for essential needs only.

The following traffic modifications remain in effect:

>> Dole Street remains closed in both directions between Frank Street/Kanewai Street and Kanewai Park.

>> Dole is open from University Avenue to Kanewai Park, the UH Manoa Hawaiian Studies building and parking structure, and the faculty and student dorms.

>> Dole is also open from St. Louis Drive to Frank Street/Kanewai Street.

Don’t miss out on what’s happening!

Motorists are advised to avoid the area, if possible, and to use alternate routes. Motorists on St. Louis Drive are also asked to slow down approaching Dole Street, as a water bypass hose is running across the road.

The Honolulu Board of Water Supply said that when the break occurred, it initially drained area reservoirs, and that residents from Punchbowl to Kaimuki may have experienced low pressure to no water service.

“After the BWS was able to isolate the damaged section of main from the rest of the system, it started to refill the reservoirs,” said BWS in a notice. “However, it takes time to restore the system to its normal pressures.”

BWS is asking customers from Punchbowl to Kaimuki that still have service to use water for essential needs only, such as drinking, cooking, and personal hygiene, until further notice, to allow the system to recover more quickly.
