Heads up, Friday the 13th fans who also happen to enjoy physical media as we need to bring a pressing matter to your attention. The fine folks at Scream Factory have revealed that their epic 12-film, 16-disc Friday the 13th Collection, which first arrived in 2020, is being discontinued. For fans of Jason Voorhees and his brand of slasher antics, this is by far the best box set out there and the time to add it to one’s shelf is running short.

Back on October 7, Scream Factory took to social media to declare that the Friday the 13th Collection is indeed going out of print. The set includes every movie in the franchise on Blu-ray, many of which were painstakingly remastered and loaded down with special features. In the post, the company said the following:
“Jason never dies…but this box set will. The Friday The 13th Collection [Deluxe Edition], featuring 12 films, 16 discs, and hours of bloody-good bonus features, will be going out of print before next Shocktober. Snag this set now in the Shocktober sale, link in comments, to make sure it lives in your collection for all eternity.”

The set includes Friday the 13th (1980), Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981), Friday the 13th Part 3 (1982), Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984), Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (1985), Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986), Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988), Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989), Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993), Jason X (2001), Freddy vs. Jason (2003) and the Friday the 13th remake (2009).

Part of the problem is that the post put the fear of God into horror fans and physical media collectors, it seems. The set isn’t even listed on Scream Factory’s website, as of this writing, as copies sold out rapidly. It’s also sold out on Amazon, as well as other sites like DiabolikDVD. But that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to get one’s hands on, at least not yet.
The set retails for around $130, under normal circumstances. Unfortunately, the scarcity has driven up prices on the secondary market, with the set going for closer to $200 on eBay and Amazon. But some fans on Reddit have noted that the set has made it to shelves at Walmart stores, so there remains an opportunity to seek it out in the wild.
I bring this to the attention of you, dear reader, because I am a big Friday the 13th fan and got this box set myself when it debuted in 2020. As someone with a great many box sets, including the much-beloved Godzilla: The Showa-Era Films collection from Criterion, I can say with confidence that this is one of the best ones that I own. It’s not particularly close. This thing looks fantastic and was made with a lot of love. The movies look great and the bonus features are ample. It’s a love letter to the franchise, one it sorely deserves.
It’s not like there aren’t other ways to get these movies. There are other, cheaper box sets out there. Arrow recently released Jason Goes to Hell and Jason X on 4K. Arrow does great work. But none of the other sets on the market hold a candle to this one, both in terms of presentation and in the contents that lie within the packaging. In that way, it’s a shame that Shout/Scream Factory is discontinuing it in the coming months. The reality is what it is though and it’s all the more reason to make sure every fan who wants this in their collection has the chance to add it before it’s too late.
