On the second night of a back-to-back, the Golden State Warriors suffered their first defeat of the season, losing to the Portland Trail Blazers 119-139 on Friday, Oct. 24. Portland’s young and defensive-minded team found ways to keep Steph Curry and co. at bay throughout the game, while also executing at a high level on the offensive end.

After the game, Evan Giddings of “95.7 The Game,” was quick to note that when playing in a loaded Western Conference, shock losses that come out of nowhere are to be expected. After all, every team in the West is capable of running up the score if they can find a rhythm, and the Trail Blazers are no different.

“These are the kinds of games that are going to happen in an absolutely loaded Western Conference,” Giddings said. “You’re going to meet teams that are young, that are hungry, that are athletic, that can defend. Then the Warriors, who are a team that has the ability to do all those things at different times, when they are fatigued, when they’re playing a third game in four nights, or some nights where they just don’t have it, they’re going to get blown out. There were multiple 30-point blowouts across the Association tonight, involving Western Conference teams.”

While some unexpected losses will undoubtedly be inevitable, the challenge for the Warriors will be to avoid them whenever possible. Fortunately for the Warrirors, there’s enough experience within the roster and the coaching staff to understand how to navigate these unexpected losses and how to try and mitigate them throughout the year.

Golden State will look to get back into the win column when it faces the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday, Oct. 27.
