The Carmel Beach, located in Carmel-by-the-Sea, was closed on Friday. Monterey County’s Environmental Health Bureau closed the beach following a sewage spill. The spill was reported by the Carmel Area Wastewater District (CAWD) after the spill happened on Oct. 22. According to the agency, the spill occurred from damage to the sewer main from a previous communications utility installation and lasted less than 10 minutes. CAWD said they spilled approximately 850 gallons, but were able to recover 800 gallons, but 40-50 gallons reached the rocky tidepool area at the beach. The beach will remain closed until water samples indicate that the water is safe again. Signs have been posted at the beach telling people to avoid the beach and jumping in the water. Contact with contaminated water may cause gastroenteritis and other water borne illnesses.
