DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings dug themselves a deep hole with a disastrous start Saturday. Then they rallied to erase a four-goal deficit, dominating the second half of the game to defeat the St. Louis Blues 6-4 at Little Caesars Arena.
The Red Wings scored twice in a span of 47 seconds midway through the third period.
Alex DeBrincat whipped in a shot from the slot for his first goal of the season to tie it at 4-4 with 9:59 to play. Simon Edvinsson then fired in a shot from the point to give Detroit its first lead with 9:12 remaining.
The Red Wings needed to kill a delay of game penalty on Marco Kasper with 3:53 to play. Edvinsson sealed it with an empty-net goal with 1:13 remaining.
The Red Wings (6-3-0) ended a two-game skid. The Blues fell to 3-4-1.
Jonatan Berggren and J.T. Compher each had a goal and an assist. Rookie Emmitt Finnie also scored a goal. Andrew Copp has two assists.
John Gibson made 25 saves for the win.
These teams meet again Tuesday in St. Louis (8:15 p.m., FanDuel Sports Network), the start of a five-game trip for the Red Wings.
Berggren started the rally on the power play, one-timing a pass from Copp past Binnington at 7:52.
The Red Wings cut the deficit to 4-3 on goals by Finnie (his fourth with 1:26 remaining) and Compher (with 59 seconds to play).
Coming off back-to-back losses, including a 7-2 thrashing at the New York Islanders on Thursday, the Red Wings didn’t come out with the response they needed, falling behind 2-0 in the first period.
Jordan Kyrou scored on the power play at 7:43. Jake Neighbours tapped in a pass from Justin Faulk at 12:54.
It got worse in the second when Pavel Buchnevich converted on the power play 59 seconds into the period and Neighbours broke in alone to score his second of the game at 3:12 and put St. Louis ahead 4-0.
That’s when Red Wings coach Todd McLellan called timeout to address the team.
