Ottawa Senators goaltender Linus Ullmark just didn’t want to be left out of a burgeoning scrum on a Saturday night.
The Swedish netminder skated the length of the ice to join in a scrum behind the net of Washington Capitals goaltender Charlie Lindgren, who was also in the middle of the scrum with over 30 seconds to play in the second period of the Senators-Capitals game on Saturday night in Washington.

The chaos began after Senators forward Ridly Greig and Capitals defenseman Martin Fehérváry shoved each other in front of Lindgren. Soon enough, each player on the ice for both teams was either involved in a scrum or a shoving match of some kind. That prompted Ullmark to leave his crease and toss away the blocker from his right hand before jumping into the scrum. Moments later, he was eventually pulled away by referee Jordan Thomas-Samuels.
“I love Charlie,” Ullmark said. “I think he’s a heck of a goaltender. Obviously, he’s very fired up ever since, I think it was the second goal that was allowed. He shows a lot of emotions. So when he goes in there and sticks up for his guys, I could’ve stood waiting as well. But as soon as it kept going, it’s not really about the actual fight. It’s more about showing up for the guys and showing your presence.
“It’s not like I’m looking for them, in a way. I don’t want to instigate or anything like that. It’s not my game or anything. It’s just what the situation was kind of developing into.”
Ullmark and Lindgren were both penalized on the play. Lindgren was assessed a two-minute minor for leaving his crease, while Ullmark was penalized for goaltender participation beyond center ice. Fehérváry was assessed a double-minor for roughing, while Greig was only given a two-minute minor penalty for the same infraction.

“I loved it,” Senators forward Nick Cousins said. “I absolutely loved it. Especially when their goalie’s (getting) in there. No hesitation.”
“That was awesome to see,” teammate Dylan Cozens said. “Their goalie gets in there. Our goalie comes and gets in there, too. So, I think that fired up the boys a lot, for sure.”
The Senators defeated the Capitals 7-1, on a night when Washington’s Alex Ovechkin was seeking his 900th career goal while playing career game No. 1,500.
