Candace Parker to Be Inducted Into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame

Hailed as one of the greatest players of all time, Candace Parker will be inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. Parker won WNBA Rookie of the Year and MVP in 2008, and is the only player to accomplish this feat. She remains the only WNBA player in the top 10 in career points, assists, rebounds, and blocks. A standout at the University of Tennessee, she won back-to-back national championships in 2007 and 2008, and took home the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four both years.

Parker will be inducted along with WNBA MVP Elena Delle Donne, Minnesota Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve, and NBA analyst Doris Burke. Also, international players Isabelle Fijalkowski and Amaya Valdemoro, and Kirkwood Community College coach Kim Muhl have been elected. Barbara Kennedy-Dixon will be inducted posthumously.

WNBA and  WNBPA Extend CBA For 30 Days

The WNBA and the WNBPA agreed to a 30-day extension of their collective bargaining agreement (CBA) through November 30, 2025, to continue negotiations for a new deal. The extension was reached just before the current CBA was set to expire on October 31 and avoids a potential work stoppage, such as a strike or lockout. The two sides are still at odds on key issues, particularly the structure of a new salary system and revenue sharing, with players seeking a model more like the NBA’s.

Terry Rozier Faced An $8 Million Tax Lien, Along With Fixing Bet Allegations

As one of the central figures of the NBA’s gambling scandal, it was revealed that Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier was hit with an $8 Million tax lien in Florida. The IRS filed the $8,218,211 federal income tax lien in Broward County, Florida, in November 2023, where Rozier has a residence. Steven N. Klitzner, a tax attorney, “the lien would have been filed after past due notices were sent to the taxpayer.” Jim Trusty, Rozier’s attorney, said his client did not owe the amount that was listed on the lien.

“Terry never owed anyone $8 million,” Trusty said in a statement. “He owed $9000 of the total $8 million in taxes from 2021, and it has been paid. We just need the IRS to help remove the now-defunct lien.”

Mookie Betts Wins Roberto Clemente Award

Los Angeles Dodgers star Mookie Betts was honored with the Roberto Clemente Award. Originally known as the Commissioner’s Award, it was renamed in 1973 after Hall of Fame Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Roberto Clemente, following his tragic death in a plane crash while delivering supplies to victims of the Nicaraguan earthquake. This year, the 5050 Foundation provided significant relief during the L.A. area wildfires by donating more than $30,000 in Nike clothing to victims. The 5050 Foundation also partnered with the Dodgers Foundation to donate more than $160,000 to Brotherhood Crusade, which works to help fight hunger and homelessness in L.A.

“I remember many nights, me and Bri going to drop off food. But nobody knew,” Betts said after receiving the award. “We’re not doing that for press or anything. But I just remember that was kind of the beginning of us getting involved in the community.”
