Even though California is one of the most expensive places to live, there are so many reasons to love the Golden State. You can find almost any kind of landscape and weather within the state’s borders, and you can try any hobby you can even imagine. There’s something for everyone—even the wild animals—on the West Coast!

As one wildlife photographer, @mark_girardeau, recently discovered off the coast of Newport Beach, some animals have no trouble taking up the space they deserve. California sea lions are famously noisy and unbothered, but the massive sea lion who took over someone’s yacht is especially proud of himself. He didn’t even hesitate to roar at Mark when he stared for a bit too long!

OMG, this sea lion is massive! No one would argue with this king’s requests to take over the yacht, especially when he lets out a loud roar like that. Luckily, it’s not Mark’s boat, so he can simply move on after the shocking confrontation.

It’s just like commenter @gingernh0ney said: “Permission to come aboard—DENIED.” Marine mammals like this guy know a prime bathing spot when they ‘sea’ one, and they won’t let anyone get in the way!

“Well, I see why they’re called sea lions,” one viewer commented. No kidding! Typically, sea lions make a shorter, ‘barking’ sound rather than this cat-like roar, but assertive males won’t hesitate to let others know when they’re stepping too close.

As many have guessed from the massive animal’s size, this new yacht owner is a male sea lion. Males typically have a large crest on the top of their heads, whereas females have a typical round head. If all goes well for this king, he might be hosting a small gathering on his new boat sooner rather than later!

California Sea Lions

California sea lions are just one of the many marine mammal species common on the West Coast, but they are perhaps the noisiest. They lounge together in the dozens on beaches or docks whenever they see fit!

However, similar animals, such as harbor seals and elephant seals, also call the Golden State home. Even sea otters can be spotted floating in the waves! In fact, a rogue sea otter has been harassing California surfers for the last several years, but thankfully, no seals or sea lions are following suit. They’ll stick to taking over yachts and roaring at photographers.
