Water main break on Culver Road in the daylight (Photo: WHEC)

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A water main has finally been shut off, hours after it broke and flooded a neighborhood around Culver Road and Meredith Street on Tuesday morning.

News10NBC was at the scene of the break throughout the morning as the water gushed onto yards and seeped into homes. We started hearing reports of the break around 2:30 a.m. At one point, the water was about 10 inches deep on the road.

Updates on local, state and national News are detailed by the News10NBC Morning Team, along with traffic, sports and the weather forecast.

The City Water Bureau arrived around 7:45 a.m. to shut off the water and make repairs. Officials say they expect to be there all day long. We’re still working to learn how long the repairs will take and what caused the break.

The Rochester Police Department is asking drivers to avoid Culver Road from Clifford Avenue to Lancraft Street because of the break. Orange barriers are up to block the road and the flooded area seems to be about 30 feet wide. The City Water Bureau says two mains are under the road and believes that one of them, a 24-inch main, broke.

One neighbor shared video with News10NBC of their basement flooded. A fire truck had to respond to help that neighbor. We’re working to learn whether any other homes have been flooded. See the video here:

Our crew sees knocked-over trash cans, floating garbage bags, and debris in yards at the scene. We also saw neighbors on their porches yelling to each other, unable to cross the street because of the water.

The water main break comes after the roads got a coating of lake-effect snow overnight, prompting our weather team to issue a Yellow Alert. Temperatures this morning are below freezing, in the mid-20s. Check back for updates.
