A 16-year-old was taken to the hospital after being shot in the head in Monessen, Westmoreland County Tuesday evening. Chief Yuhasz said when they arrived on scene, a 16-year-old was found with a gunshot wound to the head. He said the victim was alert and conscious and flown to Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh for treatment.The Westmoreland County District Attorney’s Office said the victim is expected to survive. We’re told the teen was in a vehicle with two other people when he was shot. No other injuries were reported. Officers were on scene for hours processing evidence and reviewing video footage. The chief said a handful of shell casings were discovered at the scene.Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 was there as two vehicles were towed away.”The car that the victim was in was struck once, that we can tell so far. There was a neighboring vehicle parked alongside the road that was struck also,” Yuhasz said. “We also found a residence down the way that may have a bullet hole or couple in it.”The Westmoreland County District Attorney’s Office told Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 that one person was taken into custody. No one was charged as of 10 p.m. However, Chief Yuhasz said there have not been any arrests. Chief Yuhasz said he does not believe there is a threat to the community. “I believe this is a targeted event unfortunately, against this victim,” Yuhasz said.Although that is the case, the Monessen School District said that since the shooting occurred near its elementary school, students will learn remotely on Wednesday, Nov. 12. “The safety of our students and staff is our top priority,” the post said. “We will continue to monitor the situation closely and reassess conditions tomorrow. Updates will be shared with families as soon as possible.” The chief said the Westmoreland County District Attorney’s Office was assisting in the investigation.
