BOSTON — Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews and goaltender Anthony Stolarz left Tuesday’s game in Boston due to injuries.

Matthews left midway through the second period and didn’t return for the start of the third.

On his final shift of the night, Matthews was hit from behind by Bruins defenseman Nikita Zadorov. Seeking apparent retribution, he charged after Zadorov and delivered a hit of his own in the corner of the Boston zone.

He left for the Leafs dressing room during the ensuing TV timeout.

“I think it’s a penalty personally. But I’m not the referee,” Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube said of Zadorov’s hit on Matthews. “I don’t like it. I don’t like the hit. He was in a vulnerable position.”

Matthews has played in every game this season after missing 15 due to injury last season. He entered the night tied for the team lead with nine goals.

Berube said postgame that he doesn’t know the severity of Matthews’ injury.

“I can’t give you a timeline or (tell you) how serious it is right now,” Berube said. “I’m not sure when he hurt it to be honest with you.”

Stolarz exited after the first period. He allowed three goals on only 10 shots.

During the first TV timeout, Stolarz went to the bench and spoke with a member of the medical staff, but remained in the game.

He was making his 13th start of the season.

Berube said he doesn’t believe Stolarz’s injury is serious.

“I think he’ll be fine,” Berube said.
