The Warrensburg Police Department says two people are dead and another was hurt after a domestic disturbance escalated to gunshots early Wednesday morning. The incident happened around 7:20 a.m. in the 700 block of Cedar Drive. Police responded to the area on reports of a domestic disturbance.Police tell KMBC 9 News that a man and a woman were involved in a domestic disturbance at an apartment in the area. Police said a bystander attempted to intervene and was shot and killed. That individual has been identified as Tony Barron. As police arrived on the scene, they saw a person with a weapon fleeing the area toward Hale Lake Road. Police said that the individual then fired shots at officers. Police did not return fire. At the time, police advised local schools and businesses to go into lockdown as they pursued the suspect.A spokesperson for the Warrensburg Police Department said that the suspect was eventually found dead with what is believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The woman involved in the initial domestic disturbance was treated at an area hospital and later released. The Johnson County Emergency Management Agency said that East Hale Lake Road, Ridgeview and Mitchell were closed Wednesday morning due to an “active police presence” that ended when the threat was no longer active.Officials with Whiteman Air Force Base also offered information on the situation, adding that a shooting Wednesday morning in Warrensburg involved an off-duty airman and “resulted in a fatality.” According to police, the off-duty airman involved was the initial suspect in the domestic disturbance who died as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Warrensburg School District Superintendent Steve Ritter sent a letter to families about Wednesday morning’s “emergency situation,” saying gunshots were fired in the area. Warrensburg High School reportedly entered a full lockdown under the direction of law enforcement, and other buildings followed limited lockdown procedures. Later in the morning, Maple Grove Elementary was identified as “an area of concern,” Ritter said.
