Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown said he did not mean to offend anyone by doing President Donald Trump’s signature shimmy after scoring a touchdown Sunday against the Washington Commanders, a game Trump attended.

“First of all, if I offended anyone, I do apologize. I did not mean to offend anyone,” St. Brown said Wednesday on the latest episode of his “St. Brown Podcast,” which he hosts with his brother Equanimeous. “It was just, we’re having fun. If any president was at that game, if they had a dance, I would have done it. It had nothing to do with who the president was.”

Clips of St. Brown dancing quickly went viral, and Trump reposted a clip of St. Brown doing the dance on Truth Social that included a caption that said in part, “Amon-Ra St Trump!”

St. Brown pointed to the stands, then did the celebration following his 9-yard touchdown in the first quarter of the Lions’ eventual 44-22 win at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Md. Trump arrived at the stadium near the end of the second quarter.

The dance has been performed by NFL stars including Nick Bosa, Brock Bowers, Za’Darius Smith and Calvin Ridley in the past year, and USMNT star Christian Pulisic drew criticism for doing the dance after a goal last November. Shortly after he was elected, Trump attended UFC 309 at Madison Square Garden in November 2024, where multiple winning fighters mimicked the dance in celebration.

Trump became the first sitting U.S. president to attend a regular-season NFL game in 47 years and the first at the Maryland-based stadium. He also attended Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans in February.

“Even after the game, I found out, someone told me that was the first game that a president has been to in over 40 years, first regular-season game, which is crazy,” St. Brown said Wednesday. “So, we were just having fun doing the dance. It was nothing more, nothing less. Just a quick shimmy, whatever you call it.”
