WINONA LAKE, Ind. (WISH) — A small college in northern Indiana made their mark in collegiate history Tuesday after their women’s basketball team dominated in a 172-91 win over Ohio Christian University.
The 172-point win for the Grace College Lancers set the new record for most points scored by a women’s basketball team in a single game at any collegiate level, including NAIA, NCAA, and Divisions I, II, and III.
The previous high score sat at 159, held by two schools in the NCAA and NAIA classes: Grambling for the NCAA, set in 2024; and Oklahoma Baptist for the NAIA, set in 1995.
The new mark was set in the fourth quarter, after forward Emma Sperry “drove to the lane and hit a pull-up jumper to push the Lancers’ total to 160, officially setting a new collegiate scoring record.”
The record breaking doesn’t stop there – Grace also set a record for most points scored in the first half of a game, clocking in at 93 points. The school says that was one point away from breaking the NCAA record set by UCONN in 2018.
As the Lancers dominated the court, sophomore guard Maddy Poynter also made Grace College history, shooting an “eye-popping” 17 for 17 from the charity stripe and breaking the school’s free throw record.
Overall, Grace scored “an average 4.3 points per minute” and scored over 46 points in three of the four quarters.
“I’m so proud of how this team has competed with joy,” Grace head coach Dan Davis said in the school’s game recap. “This is something really cool for us to look back on and see that we really accomplished something special as a group.”
