LAS VEGAS — The tightly contested American League MVP race didn’t feature any Red Sox players at the top, but two pitchers got down-ballot votes.
Red Sox ace (and Cy Young runner-up) Garrett Crochet finished eighth in the voting and closer Aroldis Chapman finished tied for 18th. Crochet got a fifth-place vote, four sixth-place vote, five seventh-place votes, six eighth-place votes, four ninth-place votes and two 10th-place votes from the 30 voters. Chapman got a single 10th-place vote, tying him with Tampa Bay’s Yandy Díaz and the Athletics’ Jacob Wilson.
Yankees slugger Aaron Judge won the MVP award for the third time — and the second year in a row. He got 17 first-place votes while Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh got 13 first-place votes after a 60-homer season. Cleveland’s José Ramírez, Kansas City’s Bobby Witt Jr. and Detroit’s Tarik Skubal rounded out the top five.
Crochet and Chapman are the first Red Sox pitchers to receive MVP votes since Nathan Eovaldi was tied for 15th in 2021. Crochet had the highest finish by a Boston pitcher since Pedro Martinez finished fifth in 2000.
