This week we have Claire Danes in a thriller that reunites her with the showrunner of Homeland and a gripping drama about the Troubles from Channel 4. Elsewhere Jack Whitehall leaves the jokes at the door as he takes on the role of a baddie in the revenge drama Malice, and David Attenborough narrates another awe-inspiring natural history show for the BBC. Throw in a bit of Eddie Murphy and you’ve got yourself a merry little November weekend.

Here’s your watchlist…

The Beast in Me (Netflix)

Claire Danes is reunited with the Homeland showrunner Howard Gordon for this new psychological thriller, which also happens to have Jodie Foster and Conan O’Brien among its executive producers. Danes plays a famous author who has retreated from public life and all but stopped writing after the death of her son. However, when Nile Jarvis (Matthew Rhys), a big-time real estate mogul, moves in next door, she finds a new subject for a book when she learns he was once the prime suspect in the disappearance of his wife. But her obsession with him will soon lead to a deadly game of cat and mouse that plays out across this gripping series.

Trespasses (Channel 4 streaming)

Based on Louise Kennedy’s acclaimed 2022 debut novel, this powerful drama is set against the backdrop of a small town near Belfast in 1975 at the height of the Troubles. It follows the story of Cushla (Lola Petticrew), a Catholic teacher and part-time barmaid in her family’s pub, who falls into a dangerous romantic relationship with Michael (Tom Cullen), an older married Protestant barrister, while also having to deal with her alcoholic mother (Gillian Anderson) back home. This tense drama builds into a deeply affecting story that is always on the edge of erupting into violence and tragedy.

Malice (Prime Video)

You may associate Jack Whitehall with stand-up shows and sitcoms, but in this new thriller he gets to show a darker side in the story of a man who infiltrates a wealthy family in search of revenge. Whitehall plays Adam, a tutor who earns the trust of Jamie Tanner (David Duchovny) and his wife, Nat (Carice van Houten), while they’re on holiday in Greece. When the Tanner family nanny falls mysteriously ill, Adam orchestrates a way into their London home and begins to pit them against one another. But by the time anyone realises who’s behind the chaos, could it already be too late?

Kingdom (BBC iPlayer)

From lions and leopards to wild dogs and antelopes, the series is as ever beautifully shot and features memorable moments of excitement and peril.
