Two nations gear up for another tune-up match for next year’s marquee event, as the United States takes on Paraguay in an international friendly on Saturday night.

The purpose of the friendly matches is for nations to not only fine-tune their rosters for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, set to be held in North America next year. With the United States playing the role of hosts, they have already qualified, using this as an opportunity to size up its competition before one of sports’ grandest events.

This is the first of two matches for these two countries in this current international window. The U.S. will go up against Uruguay next Tuesday, while the Paraguay side will be going up against another North American powerhouse, Mexico.

The Americans, who qualified for the World Cup based on the fact that they are the hosts, have to do a lot of work in order to instill some optimism amongst supporters across the country. Since losing to Mexico in the CONCACAF Gold Cup Final, they have lost to South Korea and drew with Ecuador. Yet, the Yankees do have wins over Japan and Australia.

Paraguay’s last match last month saw them lose to South Korea as well. However, the nation also had respectable efforts against Ecuador and Japan earlier this fall.

Paraguay qualified for the tournament thanks to finishing sixth in CONMEBOL qualifying.
