Theo’s abuse of Todd is really sinister

Our Coronation Street review was quite hard to write this week, because it’s been a slightly tricky week on the cobbles, with some hard-hitting stories.

There was Todd’s abuse of Theo really ramping up, David and Shona wrestling with their decisions about their baby girl, and Roy writing secret letters to someone in prison – and getting to know the prisoner’s mum, too.

It was a lot to deal with!

Here’s what we thought of the action in our Coronation Street review.

Theo and Todd’s storyline continued

We are extremely fond of Todd Grimshaw. He is funny and cutting and he’s generally really entertaining. But this week we saw Todd finally break under Theo’s abuse, and become a shadow of his former self.

Theo is a terrible person. His abuse and manipulation of Todd is so hard to watch, but both Gareth Pierce, who plays Todd, and James Cartwright, who plays Theo, are both doing a very good job of portraying this storyline.

This week, Todd’s sense of helplessness really came through as Theo moved the goalposts all the time, leaving Todd unsettled and upset. He even brought Pete – the man he cheated with – back to the flat for dinner, told Todd to charm him, then got annoyed with Todd when he did just that.

And then there was George. Thanks to Theo’s meddling, Todd turned up late and unprepared for a very important funeral. George was – understandably – furious. But considering Todd is like a son to him, and he’d never been so badly prepared before, he was also a little unreasonable.

Then Todd, who’s obviously a man teetering on the very edge though George doesn’t know that, reacted very badly, and now he’s out of a job and George feels terrible.

Theo’s even forcing Todd to embark on a brutal fitness regime. He signed him up for the Weatherfield half marathon without asking. And then he told everyone they were raising money for an MND charity in memory of Paul. Which means Todd can’t pull out. It’s very sinister.

It’s a grim storyline this, but it’s strangely gripping. We really want Theo to get his comeuppance. Hopefully Todd will take terrible revenge involving a rhubarb crumble, or something.

Coronation Street review – We love Christina

One bright spot in this bleak storyline is Christina. She is fast becoming one of our favourite recent additions to the show. She and George work so well and she just feels right in Coronation Street. We’re very glad we got to keep her, even though Daisy moved on.

Abi is a fool

Oh Abi. Abi, Abi, Abi. What a silly sausage you are being. WHAT did you think was going to happen when you blew up your life, and Alfie’s too, to move in with awful Carl? It was never going to end well, and now Carl’s making secret plans to go back to Germany without you.

We’re not even sorry. We think the sooner he leaves, the better, quite frankly.

But we did like Tracy Barlow going in to bat for Abi and defending her to Kevin (after Abi had punched her!).

Torment for Shona and David

Shona and David got confirmation this week that their unborn baby girl has a cervical teratoma, meaning they’ve got some big decisions to make.

On screen, Shona and David seem to have been sent away to Google and chat about it together. We’re pretty sure that in real life they would be receiving a lot of support from the hospital doctors and midwives, charities and other organisations. In fact, we’d like to see more of that.

Coronation Street review – Roy’s letters

OOH! Roy is writing to someone in prison and now he’s getting to know the mother of the person who is in prison too. Who could it be? We had a sudden thought that perhaps this is linked to the Corriedale crossover episode. Is Roy writing to the mother of someone who is in Hotten Prison, rather than Weatherfield?

Perhaps it’s Lydia? Her stepson Samson is currently behind bars. Tom King’s still in jail, but his mum is dead, so it can’t be him. What do you think?

Carla’s family

We still can’t talk about the awfulness of Becky’s return. But one thing we love is the relationship between Lisa, Carla, Betsy and Ryan. They just work so well as a family. We love them. Betsy taunting Ryan this week about being the favourite child was adorable. Becky! DO NOT RUIN THIS FOR US.

Megan and Will’s relationship

Meanwhile Megan and Will’s uncomfortable romance continues to mirror Tim’s reluctance to accept his own grooming as a teenager, which is really quite clever.

We already hate Megan and now Daniel’s back and fluttering his eyelashes at her, and we think actually they deserve each other.
