Fox News interrupted its regular programming for breaking news about President Donald Trump, as he declared, “It’s over.”

The live news network broadcast multiple bulletins concerning Trump, beginning with his thoughts on New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani. Regarding Mamdani, Trump said, “I met with a man who’s a very rational person.

“I met with a man who really wants to see New York be great again, and I can say again because New York was great. When I came down to Washington initially, the city was so hot and was doing great. We were having some telltale signs of problems because we had a mayor that was not doing a great job, but still… it was moving along.

“It really went pretty bad. I think he can bring it back. The question is, will he bring it back all the way? Will he bring it back greater than ever before, which I guarantee is his wish. I think he wants to make it greater than ever before. And if he can, I’ll be out there cheering for him.”

Just hours later, though, the network had additional breaking news to report, as Trump canceled deportation protections for Somali immigrants in Minnesota, reports the Express.

He posted on his social media platform Truth Social, “Minnesota, under Governor Waltz, is a hub of fraudulent money laundering activity. I am, as President of the United States, hereby terminating, effective immediately, the Temporary Protected Status (TPS Program) for Somalis in Minnesota.

“Somali gangs are terrorising the people of that great state, and BILLIONS of dollars are missing. Send them back to where they came from. It’s OVER! President DJT.”

The post sparked divided reactions online, with one X user responding, “You can’t destroy their country and deport them at the same time… where are they supposed to go?”

Another commented, “TPS was never meant to be permanent. Trump is enforcing the law and ending years of Washington looking the other way.”

Rep. Betty McCollum took to X to fume, “Donald Trump’s ugly late-night threats against Minnesota’s Somali community do nothing to address the rising cost of living for all Americans from the Trump-Republican health care crisis, tariffs, and tax breaks for billionaires. The Somali-American community is a vibrant part of our state, and I stand with them amid Trump’s attacks. Americans deserve better.”

Trump’s U-turn to remove protections for Somalis comes after years of targeting Somali immigrants in every campaign cycle in Minnesota since he first ran for president in 2016. The state has become a destination for Somali immigrants in recent decades, dating back to the 1990s.

United States Census Bureau data from 2023 indicate that 63,192 people in Minnesota have Somali ancestry, the highest concentration in the country, followed by Ohio, where nearly 30,000 people reported Somali ancestry.

In the decades since the first wave of Somali migrants resettled in the state, Somalis have established flourishing cultural and business districts, sent their children to its colleges and universities, and elected leaders from their own communities to Minnesota’s city councils, mayoral offices, legislature, and the U.S. Congress.
