The end of the New Jersey Devils‘ tilt with the Detroit Red Wings was heated.
After the buzzer sounded, solidifying New Jersey’s 4-3 regulation win over Detroit, all six Red Wings on the ice mixed it up with five Devils skaters, and Jacob Markstrom.
Involved in the chaos was defenseman, Jonas Siegenthaler.
Rewinding to the third period, Siegenthaler laid a solid check on Red Wings forward, Lucas Raymond. It left the Detroit forward on the ice for a bit before he skated off to the visiting bench under his own power.
Tensions continued to boil over between the two sides, and some pushing and shoving ensued as the officials tried to break up the between whistle antics.
There was no penalty on the play, but that didn’t stop the Red Wings, Raymond included, from chirping the Devils defenseman on the play.
Following the Devils’ win, all skaters on the ice, including Markstrom, were involved in extracurricular physicality. Raymond found Siegenthaler and those two began to wrestle as the Detroit forward sought his payback.
Asked about the collision with Raymond at center ice and the aftermath, Siegenthaler responded, “I was joining the rush and turned around. I wanted to change and ran into him. And I mean, it wasn’t a very hard [hit], I would say. But you know, he can act however he wants. I don’t think it was bad.”
The situation stemmed from a first period incident that laid the groundwork for a chippy, chaotic game. Nico Hischier took an illegal check by J.T. Compher that saw the Red Wings forward sit for two minutes.
The Devils didn’t score, but Stefan Noesen made sure that Compher answered the bell, and dropped the gloves with the Detroit center.
Certainly, these two teams won’t forget what happened on Thanksgiving week. Unfortunately, the two won’t meet again until March 8th, 2026.
Mark it on your calendars.
