Ahead of the release of his Amazon MGM holiday comedy Oh. What. Fun., Michael Showalter has inked a deal to reteam with the studio as the director of a modern reimagining of the 1987 Diane Keaton dramedy Baby Boom, Deadline can confirm.

Plot details on the new take are under wraps. Producers include Stacey Sher for Shiny Penny and Showalter and Jordana Mollick for Semi-Formal Productions. Katie Aquino will executive produce for Shiny Penny, with Emily Crook overseeing for Semi-Formal, which has a multi-year first-look deal with the studio.

In the original Baby Boom, directed by Charles Shyer, Keaton played J.C. Wiatt, a high-powered New York businesswoman who unexpectedly becomes the guardian of a baby. Released by United Artists, the film was written by Nancy Meyers and Shyer, and produced by Meyers. For Keaton, who passed away on October 11, the project came at the height of her stardom, following roles in The Godfather 1 & II, Annie Hall, and more.

We were first to report on Showalter’s Oh. What. Fun. in March 2024. Michelle Pfeiffer stars in that one as Claire Clauster, a mother who organizes a special Christmas outing for herself when her family forgets her in the shuffle. Slated for release on Prime Video on December 3rd, the film also stars Felicity Jones, Chloë Grace Moretz, Danielle Brooks, Dominic Sessa, Denis Leary, Havana Rose Liu, Mauda Apatow, Devery Jacobs, Jason Schwartzman, Eva Longoria, Joan Chen, and Rose Abdoo.

Recently, Sher’s Shiny Penny and Showalter’s Semi-Formal have also collaborated on the Colleen Hoover adaptation Verity, which is slated for theatrical release on October 2, 2026.
