EL PASO, Tx., November 1, 2025: Earlier today, the first woman elected to an El Paso office, Alicia R. Chacón passed away at her home. She was 87 years old.

In 1970, she was then elected to the Ysleta Independent School District Board and then county clerk in 1974, while she was still on the school board. In 1983 she was elected to a city representative seat. She served two terms. In 1990, Chacón was elected as the first woman county judge.

In 1978, President Jimmy Carter appointed her a regional director of the Small Business Administration. She was also a director of the El Paso Federal Savings and Loan Association.

Chacón was born in Canutillo, Texas on November 11, 1938. She lived in Ysleta, graduating from Ysleta High School in 1975.

The Alicia R. Chacon International School is named after her.

Throughout her life she was a fierce advocate for women and Mexican Americans. She was active in various local, state and national organizations and volunteered on several boards.
