BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. (WCHS) — An in-patient psychiatric treatment facility for children will shutter its doors in early 2026, officials said.

Barboursville School, which is owned and operated by River Park Hospital and parent company Universal Health Services, announced its intentions to shut down by Feb. 4, according to a statement from River Park Hospital.

The closure comes after a “comprehensive, careful review and evaluation of multiple factors,” including the impacts of recent flooding and the cost to renovate the old building, according to River Park Hospital Director of Business Development Leslie Clagg.

Clagg said that River Park Hospital is working with the families and guardians of each of its current residents to find a new facility that suits their needs and will help ensure a smooth transition to those facilities.

The hospital also said the closure of Barboursville School does not affect its other psychiatric residential treatment programs and acute inpatient programs.

“River Park Hospital remains committed to supporting the behavioral health needs of our community and improving the quality of life for patients through individualized treatment,” Clagg said in part in the statement.
