A deputy shot a man wielding a knife at a Placer County park on Tuesday evening, according to the sheriff’s office. The Placer County Sheriff’s Office said deputies initially responded to a report of suspicious circumstances around 6:30 p.m. at Dry Creek Community Park on Walerga Road in West Roseville. Elise Soviar, spokesperson for the Placer County Sheriff’s Office, said two deputies encountered a man armed with a large knife in a parking lot. The deputies tried to speak with the man and de-escalate the situation, Soviar said, but the man then charged at one of the deputies. The deputy then discharged his weapon, striking the man. The sheriff’s office said the man died from his injuries. “Our deputies go through a lot of different training to equip them with ways to de-escalate situations. That’s exactly what they were trying to do in this situation. It all unfolded very quickly. And when the suspect did charge at a deputy, that’s when he feared for his life and opened fire,” Soviar said.Officials advised the public to avoid the area. The man was identified as 31-year-old Jacob Cole Rushing. The sheriff’s office said the deputy who fired his weapon will be placed on administrative leave as the agency investigates the shooting. The Placer County District Attorney’s Office will assist in the investigation.
