The Las Vegas Aces selected A’ja Wilson at No. 1 in the 2018 WNBA draft. A night that was perhaps the greatest of her life quickly turned scary for the three-time WNBA champion, and it was because of her dress.
On Thursday, Wilson revealed on Sean Evans’ “First We Feast” show about how her dress on her draft night almost choked her. The Aces superstar player wore a light pink jumpsuit with a choker.
“It’s important to get fitted the right way because I was about to die on one of the biggest nights of my life. The way the choker cute rumper, cutest thing ever, but the way the choker was choking me was scary,” Wilson said. (Timestamp 15:00)
The four-time MVP hilariously admitted that being the No.1 pick saved her from being choked in her dress.
“And I promise you, if I didn’t go number one, I would have fainted in that place,” Wilson added. “I was on my way down, you had to wait a couple more. I could not wait any more drafties. I had to be number one so I could stand up, take my picture, and go. So God knew I had to be number one cuz he knew I could not sit there any longer.”
Since that night, A’ja Wilson has brought three titles to Las Vegas. She is a two-time Finals MVP, four-time league MVP and a three-time WNBA Defensive Player of the Year.
“Scent expert” A’ja Wilson reveals her favorite scent in an arena
Believe it or not, A’ja Wilson is a scent connoisseur. It is her confidence in her expertise that she calls herself the “unofficial scent expert.” In April 2021, Wilson started her “Burnt Wax Candle” company with her mom, Eva Wilson.
During the interview, Evans asked the Aces star if she had a favorite scent in a basketball arena, and if that scent could be sold in candles.
“I love the smell of popcorn in arenas. Like when we go to Dallas, you can literally smell it during shoot around and I’m like, “Ooh, I cannot wait to get some popcorn after the game.” That’s like my favorite,” Wilson said. “I love that. Would it be a candle? No. I don’t think anyone wants a popcorn candle.” (Timestamp 20:00)
In 2022, A’ja Wilson told Boardroom that the idea to start the candle company came when she was thinking of starting her own business. She said that a few days before Christmas, during the COVID-19 pandemic, her mom saw at least 150 candles in her cabinet. She suggested that Wilson start the candle business.
