A while ago, we asked the BuzzFeed Community to tell us which “hated” movies they actually love. On another post, they also shared which “loved” movies they hate. Here the unexpected (and controversial) results:1. HATED: Barbie (2023)A scene from Barbie with America Ferrera, Ariana Greenblatt, and Margot Robbie in a convertible, one in a checkered outfit with a hat, and the others in patterned tops, look surprised while driving through a vibrant setting

Warner Bos. / Courtesy Everett Collection

“Yes, the message was and is important, but this movie was not the correct vehicle for it. It should have been a fun movie, but it left me leaving the theater thinking, ‘What did I just watch?'”

Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman in uniforms sit on the ground against a stone wall, engaged in a conversation

Columbia / Courtesy Everett Collection

“I’m in the minority here, but I watched The Shawshank Redemption and honestly don’t understand what all the fuss was about. I thought it was bleak and dull. The performances held my attention, but overall, I thought that the movie simply did not ‘speak to me’ at all.”

3. LOVED: Cats (2019)Cat character in ornate, pearl-adorned costume, looking at another cat in a scene

Universal Pictures / courtesy Everett Collection

“I thought it was impressive. It was obvious that everyone who worked on this movie put 100% into it — even if the weird CGI cats were hard to handle. And the set pieces were amazing!”

4. LOVED: Wild America (1997)Three young people outdoors in casual clothing with backpacks, one holding a camera. Pine trees are visible in the background

Warner Bros / Courtesy Everett Collection

“Siskel and Ebert gave it two thumbs down, but they are obviously NOT teenage girls. It was just an excuse to put three cute boys at the height of their fame into a movie. I feel like I’m 14 again when I watch it. I don’t even care about the plot.”

A couple passionately embraces in the rain, with the man lifting the woman as they gaze into each other's eyes

New Line Cinema / Courtesy Everett Collection

“My coworkers told me I would sob watching The Notebook. My eyes were so dry, I needed Visine.”

dani257

“I know a lot of people think it’s the ultimate 2000s romance movie, but I can’t stand it. Threatening to off yourself to get a woman you don’t know — who has also said ‘no’ multiple times — to go out with you is NOT romantic!!!”

6. Loved: Bride Wars (2009)Two women in strapless wedding dresses are sitting on the floor, looking at each other with surprise

20th Century Fox / Courtesy Everett Collection

“It got some low ratings, but Bride Wars with Kate Hudson, Anne Hathaway, and pre-GotG and -Parks & Rec Chris Pratt is actually pretty good. If it’s on TV, you bet I’m going to turn it on.”

7. Hated: Moulin Rouge! (2001)Group dressed in vintage theatrical costumes with top hats and suits, smiling and posing dramatically in front of an ornate backdrop

20th Century Fox / Courtesy Everett Collection

“It has a good set and all, but it’s nothing special. I’m also not a fan of Baz Luhrmann.”

8. Loved: The Village (2004)Person outdoors in a hooded cloak, looking intently at the camera with trees blurred in the background

Buena Vista Pictures / Courtesy Everett Collection

“I never understood the hate for The Village. IMHO, the only wrong thing is it being marketed as a horror movie, instead of the suspense/drama it really is.”

9. Hated: Forrest Gump (1994)A man in a suit with a plaid shirt sits on a park bench beside a suitcase and box of chocolates

Paramount / Courtesy Everett Collection

“I honestly think Forrest Gump is a stupid movie. People still quote from that movie even today, and all I can think about is how awful the film really was.”

10. Loved: Encino Man (1992)A person with wild hair stands outdoors on grass, wearing a patterned shirt over a purple top and a necklace with a pointed pendant. Mountains are in the background

Buena Vista Pictures / Courtesy Everett Collection

“It has a 17% on Rotten Tomatoes, but it’s got Sean Astin, Pauly Shore, and best of all, BRENDAN FRASER with long hair pre-George of the Jungle. The premise is just ridiculous enough and the characters (and actors who play them) are just outstanding enough to make the movie one of my absolute faves. It’s little known but should be more known.”

11. Hated: Mean Girls (2004)Four women sit together, enjoying a conversation. The scene suggests a lively and engaging group interaction

Paramount

“I loved it growing up, but watching it now, as an Asian woman, all the racist stereotypes and fetishizing of the ‘cool Asians’ just make me sick. I can’t watch it anymore because of that.”

12. Loved: White Chicks (2004)Two people stand in a store wearing embroidered shirts, one in light blue and the other in light green, each with a necklace and serious expressions

Columbia Pictures / Courtesy Everett Collection

“Some people hated it, but I loved it.”

13. Hated: Breakfast at Tiiffany’s (1961)Person in elegant attire with pearl necklace, holding a cigarette holder, posing with a relaxed expression and styled hair

Paramount Pictures / Courtesy Everett Collection

“Breakfast at Tiiffany’s is a movie in search of a plot. No likable characters.”

balljame

“It’s hyped up as this incredible movie, but when I watched it for the first time, I was so underwhelmed. The song ‘Moon River’ is by far the best thing to come from the film.”

14. Loved: Bewitched (2005)I don't know who these people are. A woman wearing a casual jacket sits outside, looking at a man in a jacket, who sits beside her with a thoughtful expression

Columbia Pictures / Courtesy Everett Collection

“Bewitched with Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell! I used to watch it religiously. I think it’s such a funny and charming film.”

15. Hated: The entire Toy Story seriesWoody, a cowboy doll, and Buzz Lightyear, a space ranger toy, stand confidently on a bed in a child's room with cloud wallpaper

Buena Vista Pictures / Courtesy Everett Collection

“I’m entirely on board with disliking Toy Story (the entire franchise, in my case). I get what it was trying to do, but the Muppets told the exact same story ~better~ years earlier with The Christmas Toy.”

16. Loved: Hoodwinked! (2005)Animated Little Red Riding Hood confronts the Wolf, who is wearing an apron, inside a cozy house setting

Courtesy Everett Collection

“I don’t care about the low-quality animation; I love that movie! The script is hilarious, and it was clever to twist traditional fairy tales with a Rashomon-style narrative.”

17. Hated: Elf (2003)Three people in a playful scene; the central figure wears an elf costume, interacting energetically with the others dressed in a suit and medical attire

New Line Cinema / Courtesy Everett Collection

“Elf is just squawky annoyance.”

kumamori137

18. Loved: Death to Smoochy (2002)Person in a pink dinosaur costume joyfully surrounded by excited children

Warner Bros / Courtesy Everett Collection

“Ebert called it the worst movie of the year, and it’s one of my favorites! A dark comedy about the seedy side of children’s television and charities, starring Robin Williams, Edward Norton, Catherine Keener, and Jon Stewart. Cracks me up every time!”

laurae4525fb3d9

19. Hated: Avatar (2009)An alien character with blue skin, braided hair, and a curious expression appears in a lush environment, possibly from a science fiction film

20th Century Fox / Courtesy Everett Collection

“Man, I hate Avatar. Great effects, but the story was such a trite, recycled POS. The characters were all clichés and could have just worn T-shirts saying which trope they were: Bad Guy, Military, Reluctant Hero, Scrappy Scientist, Tribal Elder, His Daughter, Her Intended… Pocahontas meets Dances With Wolves meets The Last Samurai meets The Smurfs.”

wolfinwolfscothing

20. Loved: Ghostbusters (2016)Four people in uniforms stand confidently with gear in front of glowing light in a grand hall, resembling a film scene with a heroic vibe

Hopper Stone / Columbia Pictures / Courtesy Everett Collection

“Every time I watch it, I find something else that cracks me up. Chris Hemsworth is a riot, and Kate McKinnon slays. No one I know likes it.”

21. Hated: Citizen Kane (1941)A man in a suit looks serious, standing beside a woman with styled hair, gazing intently at him in a dramatic scene

RKO Radio Pictures / Courtesy Everett Collection

“I zoned out during Citizen Kane. I know I watched it, but I can’t remember what happened LOL. I think there was a sled called ‘Rosebud’???”

m46d00d5bb

“I did find it boring. And I always hate when people assume that if you don’t like that, you must only like CGI films — not that I can’t enjoy those. Hey, I love classic movies. I actually enjoyed How Green Was My Valley (that beat it in the Oscars) way more than Citizen Kane.”

dani257

22. Also hated: It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)A classic black-and-white photo of a smiling man in a suit and a woman in a patterned dress leaning over a stone wall

RKO Radio Pictures / Courtesy Everett Collection

“It’s a Wonderful Life is so boring and predictable. I’ve never understood why people adore it so much.”

23. Loved: Batman & Robin (1997)Two actors in superhero costumes resembling Batman and Robin stand in an icy cave setting, appearing focused and ready for action

Warner Bros / Courtesy Everett Collection

“Batman & Robin brought Chris O’Donnell into my awareness. All these years later, he’s still my favorite crush, and one day I will run away to Hollywood and marry him.”

24. Hated: The Cars and Planes franchiseAnimated characters from the movie franchises "Cars" and "Planes" are shown, featuring cars in a garage and planes in flight

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures / Courtesy Everett Collection

“Why does literally the least interesting and dumbest Pixar movie get two sequels and a spinoff with its OWN sequel?? Meanwhile, it took 15 years to get an Incredibles 2, and we will never see a Ratatouille, Wall-E, or Brave sequel.”

25. Loved: Hot Tub Time Machine (2010)Four men stand indoors, looking surprised. One wears a red sweater, while the others are dressed in casual, dark clothing

MGM / Courtesy Everett Collection

“Hot Tub Time Machine. I haven’t watched it in a bit since Tag and Game Night have become my favorite movies in the ‘completely average people wind up in bonkers, dangerous situations action-comedy genre, but it’s honestly a super-enjoyable movie.”

noidontthinkso

26. Hated: The Princess Bride (1987)Scene from a fantasy film with a man carrying a woman, another man in medieval-style clothing stands beside them outdoors

20th Century Fox / Courtesy Everett Collection

“I detest The Princess Bride. I finally watched it around 2013, and I just…was bored to tears. It wasn’t funny, it wasn’t romantic, and it didn’t do anything for me. That’s fine — not all things have to. I just don’t get why it’s so damn popular.”

cailian13

27. Loved: Xanadu (1980)Three people stand together, smiling. The man on the left wears casual attire, the woman in the middle is dressed in an elegant, strapless outfit, and the man on the right wears a tuxedo

Universal / Courtesy Everett Collection

“Xanadu is one of my favorite movies that always gets so much hate! It’s definitely not the best movie ever made, but it’s super campy and fun.”

ellgirl44

28. Hated: Inception (2010)A person in a suit sits at a restaurant table with a wine glass and teapot, appearing serious and contemplative

Warner Bros / Courtesy Everett Collection

“Inception was boring AF, and the whole ‘it doesn’t matter if stuff in a movie is anachronistic because movies are fake anyway’ is absolute anathema to me.”

tmar_of_vulcan

29. Loved: The New Mutants (2020)Three distressed people in a dim hallway: one kneeling, another holding an unconscious person, conveying urgency and concern

20th Century Studios / Courtesy Everett Collection

“It wasn’t groundbreaking by any stretch of the imagination, nor did it really live up to its horror-movie marketing, but it was solidly entertaining, and IMO, had good enough writing and characters to make me remember it as a good viewing experience. Didn’t deserve a lot of the hatred it got.”

soap6101

30. Hated: Brokeback Mountain (2005)Person in cowboy hat and denim shirt sitting casually on a fence with a thoughtful expression. Background features a blurred figure and fencing

Focus Films / Courtesy Everett Collection

“Slow and boring. Read the story; it takes 20 minutes, and you don’t have to look at endless shots of wet mountains that make you feel cold and ready for a shower.”

31. Loved: View From the Top (2003)Two women in stylish 90s outfits look surprised. One has a name tag that says "Christie." They are in an outdoor setting with others blurred in the background

Miramax / Courtesy Everett Collection

“Apparently View From the Top has a low rating, but I FREAKING LOVE THAT MOVIE. It’s funny, sweet, and has great actors in it. It’s one of my go-to movies to watch when I’m sick in bed.”

akatb720

32. Hated: Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)Three young adults are in an art gallery; one wears a varsity jacket, another covers his mouth, and the third stands with arms crossed

Paramount / Courtesy Everett Collection

“I hated Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. The main character is soooooo unlikable. How am I supposed to enjoy a whole movie about him?”

steamedham

33. Loved: Tomorrowland (2015)A man with short gray hair and a scruffy beard looks concerned, standing in front of an ornate background with various circular objects

Walt Disney Co. / Courtesy Everett Collection

“Tomorrowland is a pretty good science fiction movie. It’s entertaining, and while its message is cheesy, I think it’s hopeful as well. It portrays what it would be like if humans knew in advance that the world was going to end; we wouldn’t give a damn, and we wouldn’t do anything to remedy it — as is happening now with COVID-19. Plus, George Clooney and Hugh Laurie are in the movie! I don’t understand why everyone says Tomorrowland is bad, but I saw it once and loved it. In my opinion, it’s not as bad as people say it is.”

35. Loved: Grease 2 (1982)A couple dressed in 1950s-style fashion embrace closely at a dance, gazing into each other's eyes, with string lights visible in the background

Paramount / Courtesy Everett Collection

“Can we discuss that Grease 2 was actually awesome? The outfits, the camp, the FEMINISM? No one changed for anyone. The music was so cheesy, and honestly, that movie was 10x better.”

36. Hated: Gone With the Wind (1939)A person with vintage-style ringlet curls wears a frilly period dress with a cameo brooch, standing outdoors

Loew’s Inc. / Courtesy Everett Collection

“That damn movie took me THREE DAYS to get through. I won’t be doing that to myself again.”

37. Loved: Burlesque (2010)Person with vintage glam makeup and hairstyle poses with feather accents, wearing sparkly jewelry, evoking a classic Hollywood vibe

Screen Gems / Courtesy Everett Collection

“I love Burlesque so much. People always hate on it from what I see. It’s so fantastically fun, and the music and outfits are magic. Christina Aguilera’s hair alone in that movie should’ve won an Oscar, LOL. And I don’t need to talk about Cher — she’s Cher. I expected it to not be so great, but by the end of the movie, I was almost hopping on a bus to go dance burlesque somewhere myself. 😂”

39. Loved: The Happening (2008)Two people outside a vehicle look concerned, one seated inside, wearing a striped shirt, the other outside, in a light button-down shirt

20th Century Fox / Courtesy Everett Collection

“I love The Happening. I don’t know why because the acting isn’t good — even though Mark Walhberg and Zooey Deschanel are pretty good actors — and the plot twist is, uh, something. It’s just a weird, fun watch for me.”

shannondav

And finally…40. Hated: The Breakfast Club (1985)Five teenagers sit on a library railing, each with distinct styles, hinting at diverse high school archetypes
