Zaha Hadid Architects has unveiled plans for The Symphony Tower, a 42-story residential project in Dubai designed for Imtiaz Developments. Positioned between a racecourse and wetlands, the tower will sit near the upper reaches of Dubai Creek, adjacent to the protected nature reserve known for its migratory bird populations, including the UAE’s native rose flamingos.

The design of the scheme draws influence from Al Sadu and Talli, traditional Emirati weaving crafts known for their intricate geometric patterns and metallic-thread embroidery. The weaving techniques inform the building’s exterior profile, where an interlaced facade is intended to shift in appearance with the sun’s movement throughout the day. The structural grid defines outdoor living spaces for every apartment, producing varied terrace depths and giving each elevation a distinct rhythm.

The tower incorporates integrated photovoltaics that store energy in on-site batteries to power exterior lighting. After sunset, the tower is illuminated with a soft amber glow designed to highlight the geometry of the lattice and reference the reflective qualities of traditional woven materials.

“The precision-engineered exoskeleton serves both structural and environmental functions,” the firm adds. “Reducing solar gain by shading the façades, the exoskeleton and its terraces also shelter the tower’s outdoor living areas, providing residents with comfortable external spaces throughout much of the year.”
