The United States Women’s National Soccer Team (USWNT) rounded off 2025 with a convincing 2-0 victory over Italy in Florida on Monday, 1 December. It marked their 12th win of the calendar year, and their second over the Italians in as many days.
Catarina Macario had the game’s first big chance inside the opening 10 minutes, found with a searching ball over the top from goalkeeper Claudia Dickey. A recovering defence forced the forward away from goal, leaving her eventual effort to trickle wide.
Thirteen minutes later, the Chelsea star was presented with another opportunity, this time making no mistake. Picking the ball up on the edge of the area, Macario recognised her isolation up top and turned, dinking the ball over an onrushing Francesca Durante between the sticks to break the deadlock.
Brimming with confidence, Emma Hayes’ side put on an electric showing in Ft. Lauderdale, playing one-touch football to carve open their European opponents. A handful of chances threatened to double their lead, including Claire Hutton’s effort that ricocheted off the crossbar.
But it would be an excellent team move that crafted their second of the night before half-time, sublime link-up play between Macario and Alyssa Thompson eventually finding Jaedyn Shaw down the left. Shuffling out ever so slightly, the 21-year-old guided the ball into the top corner, postage stamp style, completely out of reach of the full-stretch keeper.
After the interval, Italy came out with intent that subsequently fizzled under the pressure of the Americans. Around the hour mark, the hosts found themselves subject to two disallowed goals, the first finished off by Lily Yohannes, who was deemed to be offside. The second was thumped home by Macario, who appeared to have her second of the game, only for it to be chalked off due to a foul in the area.
Hayes’ side continued to dominate despite a plethora of changes after the half, but couldn’t quite find their finishing touch outside of the disallowed efforts in the second 45.
The USWNT will return in January 2026, taking on Paraguay in their first game of the new year.
