Ole Miss offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. got on a plane to go to LSU with Lane Kiffin on Sunday.

But he’ll be back to coach the Rebels in the College Football Playoff with Kiffin’s permission, the two schools announced Tuesday.

“I’m grateful to LSU for allowing me the opportunity to finish this season with Ole Miss,” Weis Jr. said in a statement. “Coach Kiffin and the LSU Administration have been nothing but supportive. I’m excited about the Playoff run.”

Kiffin said part of the reasoning for allowing Weis to return was so Ole Miss wouldn’t be penalized by the College Football Playoff committee for having a patchwork coaching staff.

“I’ve already made the committee aware of this and I’m hopeful this decision will allow Ole Miss to receive the highest ranking possible because these great players are very deserving of that,” Kiffin said in a statement. “I’m excited that Charlie will be back to help coach the greatest team in the history of Ole Miss.”

Weis Jr. was one of four Ole Miss staffers who joined Kiffin in leaving for LSU on Sunday, along with receivers coach George McDonald, strength and conditioning coach Nick Savage and general manager Billy Glasscock.

In a staff announcement from Ole Miss, neither McDonald, Savage nor Glasscock were listed among the Rebels staff. Eight assistant coaches were listed, but no receivers coach or tight ends coach.

The 11-1 Rebels finished their regular season with a 38-19 victory over rival Mississippi State on Friday. They’re expected to host a first-round game in the College Football Playoff later this month, but would need to be ranked between No. 5 and No. 8 to do so. The Rebels were ranked No. 7 last week, before No. 3 Texas A&M was upset by Texas.
