Two recent studies found that drivers in Michigan have the fewest crashes and the fewest insurance inquiries per capita in America.

LANSING, Michigan — Michigan has the best drivers with the fewest crashes in the United States, according to two recent studies on American drivers.

A new study from Lending Tree looked at insurance inquiry data for all 50 states and the District of Columbia, and determined that Michigan has the best drivers in the country. The study used a data set that included incidents between the dates of Jan. 1, 2025, and Sept. 30, 2025.

Michigan was found to have the lowest crash rate per 1,000 drivers at just 10. That’s about three times lower than the states with the highest rates: New Jersey (31.5), Rhode Island (29.0) and California (28.1).

The study also found that Michigan has one of the lowest rates of speeding-related incidents, with about 1.9 incidents per 1,000 drivers. Overall, Michigan ranked 40th in speeding-related incidents. North Dakota had the highest rate of incidents at 11.9 per 1,000 drivers and New Jersey had the lowest rate of incidents at 0.2 per 1,000 drivers.

The only statistic that Michigan had a poor showing in was the rate of DUIs per 1,000 drivers. Michigan ranked 18th in the nation with about 1.6 DUIs per 1,000 drivers. North Dakota had the highest rate at 3.7 DUIs per 1,000 drivers and Florida had the fewest at 0.4 DUIs per 1,000 drivers.

A second study from May also found Michigan to have the fewest crashes per capita in the United States in 2024. The study by Insurify ranked states based on the rate of recorded car crashes in 2024, and determined the rate of crashes in Michigan to be 1.7%. Michigan’s crash rate was substantially lower than most other states, with a rate so low that the state with the second lowest crash rate, Mississippi, is nearly double Michigan’s at 2.9%.

“Michigan has reigned as the state with the least amount of collisions each year, and it even decreased its number of vehicle accidents from 2023 to 2024. It takes a proactive approach in its statewide Toward Zero Death program to foster road safety, and it shows,” the Insurify study said.

That study determined crash rates based on the number of accidents per total drivers in the state. It found that drivers in Massachusetts had the highest rate of crashes in 2024.
