Just days after Michigan fired special teams coordinator JB Brown, the Wolverines have hired Kerry Coombs to lead the position unit in 2026, the school announced on Saturday.
“Coach Kerry Coombs is a proven, exceptional football coach, and we’re thrilled to welcome him to our program,” said Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore. “Kerry’s leadership of our special teams will be invaluable. His expertise in teaching and mentoring has consistently shaped both outstanding athletes and remarkable young men – including some of the nation’s top special teams players and cornerbacks. We’re proud to have Kerry, Holly, and their family join the Michigan Football family.”
A coach at the high school, college or NFL level since 1983, the Colerain native spent the 2022-24 seasons as Cincinnati’s cornerbacks and special teams coach before not coaching anywhere this season.
Coombs spent two different stints in Columbus, as Ohio State’s cornerbacks coach and special teams coordinator from 2012-17, along with becoming an assistant defensive coordinator in 2017, and then the Buckeyes’ defensive coordinator from 2020-21.
