The Boston Red Sox have done two things this winter. They’ve managed to stockpile catchers and they’ve also managed to strengthen the pitching staff. This team had a plethora of depth when it came to their arms and that depth is lengthy going into 2026. One of the more fascinating things is going to be seeing the competition for the number four and five spots in the rotation. The one arm that is most intriguing is top ranked prospect in the organization Payton Tolle.

Crochet is known as “the war pig” and Tolle is “piglet”. There is something captivating about Tolle and his presence on the mound. The ascension he made in 2025 through the Red Sox minor league systems certainly caught our eyes. Tolle pitched 49.2 innings in High-A, before blazing through Double-A and Triple-A.
What stood out the most about Tolle was his velocity packed four seam fastball. Also, he was a strikeout machine and with great swing and miss ability. The strikeouts began to pile up. In High-A, he had 79 across those 49.2 innings, followed by 37 in 27 innings. Across the entire minor league systems, Toll piled up 139 strikeouts and finished with a whopping 36.5% strikeout rate. He blazed the system and got the call up to the show and made his highly anticipated MLB debut.
Red Sox Adding Ketel Marte Fills a Major Void in the Lineup
It was a picture perfect debut. Fenway Friday in the beautiful city connect Greens and going head to head with Paul Skenes. Tolle held his own, pitching 5.2 innings and piling up eight strikeouts. He did allow the two earned runs, but generating 14 swing and misses in his debut was as immaculate as you could have drawn up. There is so much upside with this player, but if he is going to hit his stride, there are things he needs to add to round things into form.
The debut was as electric as you could have imagined. Tolle came into Fenway and scorched the Earth with his debut. However, things changed in his second start, which leads us to how he needs to round things into form.
The Diamondbacks are a very good offense and were one of the better offenses in baseball. They sat and waited for that fastball and they teed off on it. The fastball is his bread and butter pitch and rightfully so. In his debut, the four seam fastball finished with a 38% whiff rate. He trusts it and executes it well. However, his secondary pitches are a different part of the equation.
For Tolle, he is going to want to find a secondary pitch that he can trust. Through his entire Red Sox call up, he threw his four seam fastball 195 times. Next closest pitch? His cutter 60 times and after his changeup with 20. That’s a staggering difference in pitch mix and how often he is throwing these types of pitches.
He relied solely on his fastballs. When it came to putting batters away, the four seamer was at 23.3% and the cutter at 20%. If he wants to round things more into form, developing an off-speed pitch or a breaking ball pitch would make a world of difference. He would be able to fool batters more and be able to attack them in different ways. Take Yankees starter Cam Schlittler for example. He was the guy who blew his four seam fastball past the Red Sox in the Game 3 victory, but is now working on developing a changeup or a splitter this winter.
Red Sox prospect Dorian Soto raises his stock with impressive 2025 campaign
Tolle has the effectiveness and his ceiling is sky high. He has great swing and miss ability and piling up the strikeouts. He didn’t get barreled to death or give up a lot of hard contact. Although, he does need to work on his command and limiting his walks (10.8% BB%). The tools are there and the talent is there.
There’s plenty of reason to believe that Tolle is a player that will compete for that fourth or fifth spot in the rotation. There is also the realm of possibility that Tolle begins the year in Worcester so he can develop a secondary pitch he can trust, so that way he is more of a factor for the big league club. The sky is the limit for Tolle and a player that will be a fan favorite for a long time.
